Opening Reception: September 8, 2023, 7:00-9:00 p.m.

About:

Asian Impact Society, with the support of Exhibition sponsor Place des Art, seeks submissions for “Your Art Your Reflections: Multiculturalism, Diversity and Anti-Racism” Art Exhibition and Contest.

This exhibition and contest will be presented in the Atrium at Place Des Arts from September 8 to November 9, 2023 and viewable online from September 15, 2023 to November 9, 2023.

This exhibition is FREE to apply, to view, to enjoy and to learn!

Contest Theme:

This year’s theme is multiculturalism, diversity and anti-racism.  Artwork submitted should address at least one of these themes.

For example, the artwork could be a depiction of the artist’s personal story, their interpretation of what these themes mean, a reflection of the history of these themes in our society, or a message to the viewing public. It is up to the artist.

Through this exhibition, our goal is to educate the viewing public on why multiculturalism and diversity is important and why there is no place for racism in our communities.  Education through the arts is one of the many steps we can take to building an anti-racist, diversity-embracing, multicultural society where we can all learn from each other and build stronger communities.

Adjudication Process

Artwork submissions must be made online only.  The submissions include the artist’s application and high resolution images of their artwork.  The deadline for submissions is June 8, 2023.

Digital images of the artwork and artist statements will be reviewed by the Exhibition Committee comprised of three (3) Asian Impact Society (“AIS”) directors and three (3) art specialists (“jurors”).  The responsibility of AIS directors is to preview and organize the artwork for the art specialists to evaluate.  The responsibility of the art specialists is to adjudicate and to award the artwork based on a set of criteria.

The adjudication process is as follows:

  1. AIS will organize images of the artwork into 3 age categories:  12 and under; 13 to 18; 19+.

  2. Artwork will be presented to the jurors anonymously to prevent conflict of interest.  Each juror will be provided a unique link and folder to submit their evaluation of the artwork.

  3. Jurors will evaluate against the following criteria:

    • Interpretation and clarity of the theme to the viewer.  How well does the piece reflect one of the key themes – multiculturalism, diversity or anti-racism. Is there clarity and unity in the way the theme is conveyed through the artwork?

    • Creativity and originality of the depicted theme.  Is there evidence of imagination, creativity and individuality?  Is the result distinctive and is the piece presented in a unique way that is imaginative and inventive?

    • Quality of the artwork composition and technical execution.  Does the technical execution exhibit a solid understanding of the medium?   Is quality consistent across the entire submission?   Does the artist utilize the chosen media and tools competently to enhance the appearance of the work?

    • Overall impression of the art.  What is the effect of the artwork in general and as a whole?  Does the artwork trigger an emotion; convey a positive message; or tell a personal story in accordance with the theme of the exhibit?

    • Suitability of artwork.  Is the content/subject matter suitable for a public space and all audiences?  Is the content/subject matter relevant to our local and global communities?

  4. Jurors will rank the pieces evaluated as:  1st, 2nd, 3rd, and runner-up for each age category.

  5. If necessary, the Exhibition Committee will  meet to discuss final placement of the artwork.

  6. Artists will be notified of results by mid July by AIS
